In its first edition, EILE united 44 students of 6 different countries (Brazil, Portugal, France, Mexico, Peru and Colombia) and 9 universities (University of São Paulo, University of Minho, University of Porto, University of Aveiro, École Centrale Paris, Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Tecnológico de Monterrey, PUC Peru e Universidad Industrial de Santander).
Working at multicultural groups, the students had lectures about relevant topics such as urban mobility, urbanismo and clean energy. They also took part at a case resolution about city management, looking forward to develop an engineering project to solve problems faced by brazilian cities. The projects were placed in a broad spectre of study fields, with three of them being about urban mobility, one about recycling, another one about slums’ urbanismo and last but not least, a platform of city’s data gathering
After 3 months of development, having the support and orientation of Escola Politécnica’s professor, the groups handed in the final reports, which were submitted to na assessment committee that selected the best of them, using Innovation, implementation viability and impact at Society as criteria.
In its first edition, the winning Project was “Smart Canaries”, developed by a group of 5 brazilians and 2 portugueses. It consists of a platform that allows the integration and correlation of data from diferente studies realized into a city.
